About Our School<\/p>\n

We are a happy and successful High School with a Sixth Form.\u00a0 We serve the whole community of Droitwich and its surrounding villages, making our intake socio-economically diverse, which our entire staff play up to and thrive upon.\u00a0 We use our House system alongside our academic work to create a sense of belonging, identity and recognition as well as ambition and optimism.<\/p>\n

About the Vacancy<\/p>\n

Due to the substantive postholder choosing to not return following a maternity leave, we are looking to recruit a Head of English to start in September.<\/p>\n

We are open minded about the level of seniority and experience required of applicants.\u00a0 The successful applicant could be somebody who is relatively early in their career but has a passion for teaching and learning in English and would rise to the challenge of leading a large department team successfully.\u00a0 Alternatively, the candidate could be more experienced (perhaps an existing Head of English or a senior department TLR holder) who can put their skills and talents to use in leading the department whilst also contributing to wider leadership of the school as part of the Senior Leadership Team.\u00a0 Please make your position clear with respect to this in your letter of application.<\/p>\n

There is, of course, a full job description and person specification available but it is important to stress the selected candidate will need to be a role model in their own classroom, have the credibility to inspire and lead a large team and have unwavering commitment to sustaining a culture of ambition, optimism and high performance.<\/p>\n

About our English Department<\/p>\n

The English department has a strong tradition of supportiveness; colleagues look out for one another and retain a strong sense of purpose.\u00a0 Creativity and individuality in planning and delivering is embraced and celebrated but there is also a well planned framework from which to work from.\u00a0 \u00a0The team is a good mix of those who are experienced and have been at DSHS a while and then also colleagues in the middle part of their careers who have joined us in the last 4-5 years from other schools.\u00a0 There is also a member of the team who recently completed the NQT\/ECT programme with us.<\/p>\n

At GCSE the students follow the AQA specification for Language and the Edexcel specification for Literature.\u00a0 Progress in English has been respectable (marginally above 0) but there is definitely room for improvement, particularly with disadvantaged pupils.<\/p>\n

We always have one Language, one Literature and one Film Studies group (all three are Eduqas specifications) in each Sixth Form year group.\u00a0 Value added in the Sixth Form courses has been on the up and is now regularly above national averages.<\/p>\n
