Job Description and Person Specification
About Our School
We are a happy and successful High School with a Sixth Form. We serve the whole community of Droitwich and its surrounding villages, making our intake socio-economically diverse, which our entire staff play up to and thrive upon. We use our House system alongside our academic work to create a sense of belonging, identity and recognition as well as ambition and optimism.
Our staff are talented and so incredibly supportive of one another. We have a new Headteacher who is determined to treasure the strengths of the school (we have a ‘Good’ OFSTED rating) as well being ready to address the areas where improvement is needed. We have adapted our leadership team in order to secure faster progress towards our objectives and we are particularly excited about our plans to make our staff CPD something that other schools are envious of and can learn from. Our impact on our young people, both scholastically and pastorally, is profound, but we are committed to improving it further.
You are strongly encouraged to read our ‘Information for Prospective Colleagues.’ We expect that it will give you an even deeper feel for the community we serve, our ethos, our culture and what our school is like day to day.
About the Vacancy
We currently have a vacancy in the English department. We are able to offer a permanent post in order to attract the best quality candidates.
There is, of course, a full job description and person specification available but the importance of being able to inspire young people both as a tutor and a teacher and a commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues and to continuous professional development should not be underestimated.
About our English Department
The English department has a strong tradition of supportiveness; colleagues look out for one another and retain a strong sense of purpose. Creativity and individuality in planning and delivering is embraced and celebrated but there is also a well planned framework from which to work from. The team is a good mix of those who are experienced and have been at DSHS a while and then also colleagues in the middle part of their careers who have joined us in the last 4-5 years from other schools. There is also a member of the team who recently completed the NQT/ECT programme with us.
At GCSE the students follow the AQA specification for Language and the Edexcel specification for Literature. Progress in English has been respectable (marginally above 0) but there is definitely room for improvement, particularly with disadvantaged pupils.
We always have one Language, one Literature and one Film Studies group (all three are Eduqas specifications) in each Sixth Form year group. Value added in the Sixth Form courses has been on the up and is now regularly above national averages.
Extra information is available in the ‘English Teacher – Applicant Information’ document.
